Earthquake Strikes!  最近美国灾事连连，连土地公公也要闹一闹。昨晚8:35，我吃完饭上床小憩，正迷迷瞪瞪的时候，就感觉床开始摇晃。立即把我吓醒了，赶紧下床站住，定定神后就听到窗外（开窗）似乎有大卡车开过的轰隆隆的重低音，仔细听又不是，房子到处都在吱吱嘎嘎响。正担心是不是会有更大的振动时，就感觉振动停了。赶紧上网找USGS的地震报告，居然还没出来，按F5两次后出来了。刚开始报告是5.0级，发生在8:39pm PDT，两个小时后调整为4.7级。震中在Lennox，距离LAX两公里，距离downtown约十五公里。算是我经历的离震中最近的一次地震了。幸好震源深度比较大（15公里）、持时比较短（15秒）。主震后又发生多次余震，我感受到两次，最大一次8:45pm PST，3.1级。捣乱的是著名的Newport – Inglewood断层，这条曾导致了1933年6.4级Long Beach地震的断层可能会诱发最大7.4级的强烈地震。不过这条长约55英里的断层并非著名的有可能导致“The Big One”的San Andreas断层。这是继3月23号里氏3.8级Orange County地震后一个月内南加州第二次有感地震，也是继去年7月29日Chino Hills里氏5.5级地震后南加第二次近似破坏性地震，并进一步显示南加州地震带进入活跃期。   【05/19/09添加】5月19日下午3点49分，距离主震第二天后，在几乎同样的地点爆发了强度4.1级的迄今为止最大余震。 参考： http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/05/47-quake-renews-worries-about-destructive-newportinglewood-fault.html http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/ci10410337.php http://www.scec.org/earthquakes/inglewood.html       延伸阅读： 下面的视频介绍了San Andreas断层和"The Big One"。

Lin 這三個字一脫口，每個人都會豎起大姆指說：「T.Y. Lin，林同炎是二十世紀最偉大的橋樑建築師之一。」在土木界六十餘年的貢獻，林同炎學長不僅獲得百餘獎項、建立享譽國際的名聲，還擁有伴之而來的美譽──如「預應力混凝土先生」（Mr. Prestressed Concrete）、「橋樑專家」等。   今年八十七歲的林同炎學長，神采奕奕地述說一段往事：「預應力混凝土的發明人是Engene Freyssinet，我卻一直沒機會和他碰面。1953-1954年期間，我曾赴比 利時在Magnel教授實驗室中，進行整整一年的研究、試驗，並寫了一本書，我也因這本介紹『預應力混凝土』的書籍而聞名。當時，Magnel教授和Freyssinet教授兩人為競爭對手，沒有人希望我和Freyssinet碰面。」Freyssinet發明預應力混凝土，歐洲的土木工程師是先驅試用者，而林同炎學長則將它發揚光大、推向全世界。   林同炎學長，這位一代橋樑專家，1912年生於福建福州，1931年畢業於交通大學唐山學院，1933年獲美國加州大學柏克萊分校土木工程碩士學位，爾後並獲中、美四所大學的名譽博士學位。   問起林學長如何踏上「橋樑建築」一途，林學長說：「我原本是想當政治家來幫助自己的國家，但身為最高法院庭長的父親告訴我，最好遠離政治。父親認為擔任工程師一職，更能實質地幫助國家。在我年輕的時候，土木工程在中國是很重要的一門學問，因為當時的中國需要建設很多的鐵路與橋樑。於是，我進入中國最高的工程學府──交通大學，那時候的交大有三所學院，我就讀的唐山學院於1976年因唐山大地震而毀壞。」 … Continue reading →
